1967 Massacre: I’ll seek reparation for Asaba people- Ned Nwoko
Former member of House of Representatives, Prince Ned Nwoko, yesterday said he would take up the issue of reparation for the Asaba people over the 1967 massacre which led to the death of over 1,000 persons.
Nwoko, an international lawyer, in a keynote address which he presented at the grand symposium held at the Asagba’s palace, Asaba, in commemoration of the 1967 civil war said, “As a result of our silence, the same type of genocide perpetrators operating in Sudan, went o Darfu, killed all the people and decended on the animals of their bloodied victims”.
On the theme of the symposium, Asaba ‘Massacre, the Consequences of Silence’, he said: “From Africa, the silence, the impunity is spreading to West Africa and inside Nigeria. Asaba 1967 is replicated everywhere from Gambia to Adamawa and to Cameroons”.
Nwoko, who spoke through his media aide, Mr Austin Ogwuda, said, “Reparation on its own plays an important role in both mending and damage done and educating society. Damage cause to both people and property must be fairly assessed.
“Asaba massacre, for more than 50 years has continued to be a tale and whisper of the orphans waiting for the unrepentant masters’ crumbs. I will do for Asaba, the survivors of Igbos, Isheagu, Ogwashi-Uku and Ubulu-Ukwu what i have always done for my country Nigeria.
“I will seek reparation for the massacre of Asaba and the Anioma nation. It is my life long quest to give succor to the downtrodden. Prince Nwoko will fight for your reparation for the war and your thousand deaths will never be forgotten.
