Court jails three for burgling Delta churches
A Delta State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Alihami, Agbor area, on Tuesday sentenced three burglars who specialized in stealing church instruments to two year’s imprisonment.
Members of the vigilante group in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the state, arrested the convicts on August 28, 2020, for stealing church musical instrument.
The convicts, Odafi Bright Favour, 28; Adaye Yusuf, 31; and Chibuzor Temple, 34; were arraigned on four counts bordering on conspiracy, felony, burglary and stealing.
Chief Magistrate Anene, sentenced the burglars to two years imprisonment without an option of fine. He said, “The convicts conspired among themselves to commit offences punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap C21, Vol.1, Laws of Delta State, 2006.
“Having pleaded guilty, they are hereby sentenced to two years’ imprisonment without an option of fine”. The judgement threw the vigilante group led by the chairman, Mr. Monday Kiyem, into wild jubilation as the members expressed the belief that justice had been served.
A representative of the St. John Anglican Cathedral, Agbor, which was among the burgled places of worship, Mr Patrick Egbonim, said the church was glad over the judgement, which he noted would serve as a deterrant to others.
