Lawyers Petition Police Over Sexual Harassment By Chinese Nationals
Female lawyers in Anambra State have petitioned the state police command over alleged sexual harassment of girls by Chinese nationals in Onitsha. The petition written under the aegis of Stand Up Women Society was signed by the chairperson and secretary. The petition is titled “Cases of sexual harassment, human rights and labour violations by expatriate workers.” The lawyers alleged that the expatriates always entice girls with money and that anyone of them that failed to succumb to their intimidation would be sacked. The petition read in part, “We seriously view these issues, especially the manner and situations in which they occured as breaches and harassment of the highest order by these expatriates. “Termination of one’s appointment without any justification and without payment of any benefits, exposure of the young girls to harsh weather with the attendant health risks are also serious infringement of their fundamental rights. “We hereby pray that you use your good offices to order proper investigation into these atrocities and impunity with the aim of bringing the culprits to book.” The Anambra State Commissioner of Police confirmed receipt of the petition. “The matter is under investigation,” he said.
