Shorunmu backs Akpeyi to shine in Egypt.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeperIke Shorunmu, has backed Kazier Chiefs shot stopper, Daniel Akpeyi,to shine at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt despite fears about his abilites.Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is still undecided on who will be his first choice goalkeeper but with Akpeyi playing more competitive games compared to Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, the Franco-German tactician might be swayed towards making the South-African based player his first choice.
Shorunmu, who represented Nigeria at three different Nations Cup, stated that Akpeyi had improved following recent showings for his South Africa-based club. We that are outside can say a lot of things but the people inside know much better. “Akpeyi knows that the competition he is going for is the biggest football fiesta in Africa so I’m sure he will not let anyone down. “He should believe he is a good goalkeeper and I’m sure he is going to prove a lot of people wrong and I wish him all the best in the competition”.
Akpeyi’s performances for the Super Eagles in recent time has raised questions over his abilities to man the goal for the national team but the former Super Eagles assistant coach believes he should focus on his game instead of minding the critics. “I have worked with him many years back. For him to be playing for years outside the shores of the country shows that he is indeed a good shot stopper. “It is left for him to decide his future, good or bad, “he said.
